Gnome status/installation/RPMs

This is probably premature, but...

Is Gnome to the point where the relatively unlightened, like me, can
install it
and have it be mildly functional? I just moved up to RedHat 5 last week,
and
haven't bothered to mess with DFM, since. I figure Gnome is due to do
everything
DFM did, and more.

And for the really dumb question, can Gnome be put on with RPMs? I'd
presume 
that it's not far enough along, yet. But you never know. The web page
mentions
only the tarballs and CVS.
