The problem is that src/Makefile.am hardcodes _many_ libs and CFLAGS, in
a GNU-make-dependent way.

I fixed this over a month ago, but it appears that Jeremy blew away my
fixes which solved this problem and many others.

Jeremy, I will fix this if you don't blow away src/Makefile.am again.
