not to mention that you can fake all applications into using the vfs
with a slight performance hit ... and on any os ...

second thing is .. if it's a library implementation ... changing the
library is much much easier then changing the kernel ... so it's
easier to add/remove functionality ....

if Linux will provide tarfs or ftpfs or whatever in the kernel in the
future you can just use that instead ...
