It's not unreal at all.
Solaris is perceived as being a "heavyweight" OS, suitable for large servers
but a pig for workstation use (there's some truth to that, but by and large
it's not a problem *any more*... early Solaris was an NTish pig with respect
to memory usage, though). Sun's had its eye on Linux as a low-end OS, both
to address the "heavyweight" concerns and as an alternative to SunOS 4 which
is still rather popular in certain circles (much to Sun's annoyance), and
announced that they intended to support Linux for low-end configurations
several months ago.
