config problems with audiofile

On my freshly-upgraded RH5.2 system, with a freshly checked-out package
from cvs, audiofile's autogen.sh dies with:

./configure: syntax error near unexpected token
'AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE($PACKAGE,'
./configure: ./configure: line 539: 'AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE($PACKAGE,
$VERSION)'

aclocal is finding all of its macros, and I have automake, et al.,
installed. What am I missing? Or is something wrong with audiofile's
autogen scripts?
