You should not start your window manager in your .xinitrc file at all.
If you do then the panel log out will not work.

Start it up from an xterm once X has started (you may need to kill the
existing WM first) and then log out from the panel. gnome-session will 
then restart the window manager when you log back in.

Alternately, edit the contents of share/default.session BEFORE you
start gnome for the first time and replace icewm with your choice.
(But note that icewm and e currently support more of the gnome
 bells and whistles than other wms (AFAIK)).
