I'm going to suggest, at this point, two things.  
1) check out freetype (http://www.freetype.org)  Excellent truetype
   font rendering engine.
2) check out fnlib (available in gnome cvs in fnlib module)

if you want to see those things integrated, you can also check out the
version of enlightenment that's also currently sitting in the gnome cvs.

if you've got questions, ask raster, he's been piddling with it for a while
now.
