Compilation errors when building gnome-0.13 on alpha RH5.0

Unfortunately the machine is not to hand, but I have not been able to compile
gnome-0.13-core on my linux alpha running redhat 5.0. The error is a
redefined symbol in the main system, fd_set in sys/select.h and 
linux/posix_types.h. While this may not be the appropriate list for such a
report, I have not found one that is, so any pointers anyone?
Interestingly, this error does not occur on my intel linux machine running
the same kernel version 2.0.30 albeit with libc-5.4.33 instead of (I presume)
glibc-2.0.* although the symbol does still occur in both header files.
