|To me these translated files end up as a certain UTF-8 binary

|does it then because the vicipædia webpage is stored in a certain

|figures out how to display either AE or Æ.

I'm not sure how Vicipaedia does it. I'll ask them and get back to you!

BTW how is it that you get the ligatures in when you type? 
The only way I manage to do it is by copying the character already displayed on the screen.
