I agree that it would be nice to have such support for 3.0. I suspect
that having it in place is beyond the capacities of the shell team
though.

Also extension support isn't just a question of having the necessary
capacities in GNOME Shell itself. We need distribution and installation
mechanisms in place. (I'm sure Owen could give you a better account of
this than I could.)

I know there are some concerns about customisation and GNOME 3. A few
points here:

 * Some of us who are involved in marketing have already been pushing
for the GNOME tweak tool. We're aware that it needs to become a reality.
Would you be interested in working on this? Seriously - we'd love your
help.

 * We need to send out a clear statement about the plan for
customisation in GNOME 3 (we do have a strong story here, thankfully).
This is something that I'm currently working on, and I'm hoping to be
able to blog about it out soon.
