After a conversation with the two maintainers (fejj and rml) via private email,
rml answered:
"Yes, given g-v-m hasn't seen a change in three years, it definitely qualifies
as unmaintained.
My only concern would be if some GNOME releases or distributions still use it.
I think the latest releases use gvfs for everything. If no recent release or
distributions are using it, then I am all for all of your suggestions."
After I answered
"Debian Squeeze 6.0 (recent stable) ships gnome-volume-manager 2.24.1
with one small preferences patch.
Mageia Cauldron, Mandriva Cooker, Fedora 16/17, Gentoo, Ubuntu 11.10,
openSUSE:Factory and Freshports.org (FreeBSD) seem to not list/ship
it."
