Doesn't require physical presence (though it wouldn't hurt). What it
does require is actual legwork. Basically, there's some effort that's
already begun towards this. We just need some effort to take the ball
and run. Links below. I will pitch in as much as I can between all
this other stuff, as well. Besides, this might make a good starting
point at the FOSS conference at IITM. (broad groundwork done towards
overall GNOME performance improvements) (want to make Pango faster?)

It should be fairly simple for someone to pick up one particular part
to fix, and get started. If there are roadblocks, comments, etc., just
post them here, and we can start discussion.
