Dear All, (especially Claude, Jehan...)
Thank you for your support and your concern about our translation efforts.

Dr Snehal and myself (Prof. Manish Joshi) applied for the GIMP translation project (in Marathi language) to Rajya Marathi Vikas Sanstha (RMVS, State Marathi language development institution).

As discussed by Dr Snehal, we have almost translated user interface of GIMP in Marathi. We did have an issue with the translation of Filter menu but that is also now resolved.

The funding agency RMVS want to ensure that the marathi language terms that we have used are appropriate. We have decided to organize a one day workshop where number of Marathi language experts shall verify our 'Marathi' terms that we have used for the proposed 'Marathi' GIMP.

Nice to read. It feels like this will be a quality translation.
What is RMVS? Searching the web, I found a NGO "Rashtriya Manav Vikas Samiti". Is that it?

By the way, if you wish to share your experience on translating GIMP on a news post on gimp.org afterwards, we would be happy to have it. Maybe with some nice photos of the workshop and attendees, and some text (not necessarily long, as you see fit).

Recently we have been trying to get more community input/outreach on our website, and a workshop to translate GIMP in Marathi is a cool event IMO.

We have two alternatives -
1. To wait till the consent of all the experts and then only submit our tranlated .po files
2. Submit the .po files soon, so it can go along with new release.

I would like to request you to share your thoughts on it and give advise. How the other language translation has taken place.

I think this is mostly up to you to decide, since you are the expert in Marathi here. We cannot really tell you what we think of your translation since none of us speak Marathi (I think) and it seems it is even in lack of a coordinator lately. If you really think your translation needs more attention to be releasable, then we can wait, no problem.

On the other hand, if you think it is already quite usable, you can always do it in steps, which means: submit your current version now, then do the workshop, and later submit the revised translations.

In any case, translating a Free Software is a constant work-in-progress. You can always improve it later if you wish (and hopefully you will continue to improve the Marathi translation in the future).
Thanks.

Jehan

Thanks

And to add a bit of info. We are in the process of soon releasing GIMP 2.10.4. Your translation could be part of this release if it happens quickly. ;-)

Dear Snehalata Shirude,

I saw you already created an account on l10n.gnome.org.
Do you need help to upload the translated GIMP po files on the site?

This should be rather straightforward to do when browsing from:
https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/mr/gnome-gimp/ui/

Feel free to ask anything you need here.

Hi everyone?

Has anyone unblock the situation? Can I simply ask the po files to these new contributor and push them to the git repository?

I have no idea if they even have access to Damned Lies and if they published these anywhere and I am just a bit scared they just drop the ball and we lose a full translation in a new language just because the language is missing a coordinator.
So I would just go with any compromise. Also I have no idea myself what is the usual process for translators. When people ask us how to translate for GIMP, we usually just ask them to go and ask you, guys. :P

        Seconded!

So dear GNOME-i18n, now what is the next steps for these new
contributors if there are no coordinators in their language?

In the sort term, any other coordinator (or GIMP maintainer) can
volunteer and commit Marathi files provided that they are
        properly uploaded to:
        https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/mr/gnome-gimp/ui/
        <https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/mr/gnome-gimp/ui/>

As a GIMP dev, I would not mind volunteering to just temporarily
sort out the situation, but I never used Damned Lies, and don't even
have an account. Even if I made one now, I would still have to
figure out the GUI, what to do, etc.
I guess another coordinator would just do a better job. We would
appreciate anyone to help our Marathi students (I assume they are,
seeing they are saying to be from a university). :-)

    Jehan

Hopefully someone will soon volunteer to become the new Marathi
        coordinator!
