Does anyone know why the translation part got archived?

Or does anyone have an idea / opinion if the code repository should
also be archived? Last 'real' code changes were in Jan 2015 so it does
look inactive indeed.

I’ve archived a few projects on Damned Lies that are not strictly
speaking “archived” to avoid wasting translators’ time and effort.
It’s a one-click checkbox, so we can bring these back any time we
want. (If we want. I’d say we don’t.)

Generally, when a project is archived at the GNOME Git level, it's simply deleted from l10n.gnome.org. Like Piotr said, the archive status on l10n.gnome.org is for modules that are seemingly dead but not yet archived in Git GNOME.
