Commit messages: titles should be less than 72 characters

Hi,
I see commits like this:
Updated Italian translation (cherry picked from commit 0bfe7a678d58b6e5be40fb42a1b148aa44672bad)
But commit titles should not exceed 72 characters. See for example:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/tree/README.commits
Also, in Git a commit title generally describes the action, not the
action already done. Here, instead of "Updated ...", it is better to
write "Update ...".
I guess it's the Damned Lies software that generates those commit
messages. Can someone fix it?
