This is my initial feeling about how I see it useful:

I tend to think that word count is very meaningful for a non
translated document, of half translated document, it gives a better
idea of the work to accomplish.

However when a document is mostly translated, for example after a
software update with a few new strings and a few fuzzy, I feel that
the string count is more meaningful to get an idea of the work to do.

The point is that a single word can be greatly more difficult to
translate that a sentence, especially in UI (in opposition to a
document) where space is limited for single word strings.

Do we need word count for translated and fuzzy strings?

I feel that the most relevant is the word count for untranslated strings.

Then what about:

98% - 1234 / 12 / 34 (74 words)
