The files would be inside the po directory. Since Gnome repository has now moved to git, 'master' on the

ok.
so i cloned vinagre this morning.
yes, there is a po folder.
the ta.po that i am interested in belongs to gnome 2.26
damned lies says there is a fuzzy string and one untranslated entry.
i examine the file and there are none untranslated nor a fuzzy one.
i download the file from damed lies and sure, there are two strings that need correction.
so what do i do?
If any other branch other than 'master' (e.g. 'gnome-2-28') is indicated then the 'po' directory of that branch would be the correct place to accept translations. However, the 'master' and other branches (like 'gnome-2-28') would not be available as separate folders. You have to activate these branches by using the git command (git checkout <branchname>). Unlike svn, 'git checkout' here would activate the required branch in your cloned repository. The active branch can be checked with the command: 'git branch -a'. The active branch is marked with an asterix.
i have checked this and the master is the active one.
A very nice tutorial written by Simos is available here:
seen, read it and it has been open while i worked on this problems
thanks for responding!
