Here is a simple order: 1. take screenshot in Gimp 2. cut out section I want, paste as new image 3. Apply dropshadows 5px (or 3px for menus) 4. Merge all layers 5. Add a Layer Mask on the Layer's Alpha Channel 6. Use the gradient tool with the black->white linear gradient to blend into the Alpha channel. 7. Apply Layer Mask That should be about it.
