Telsa, this list rocks! However, I wonder if it wouldn't be useful if
this information could be put inside translator comments, next to the
relevant messages, in the Locations.xml.in file. Then this information
would end up in the pot/po files next to their messages and be
immediately available to translators when they translate.

Adding translator comments is really easy. If this is the original
section in the Locations.xml.in file...

       <location>
         <_name>Blue River MARS</_name>
         <code>CWSV</code>
         <coordinates>52-06N 119-18W</coordinates>
       </location>

...then all that's needed is to insert an XML comment on the line
immediately prior to the one where the name occurs:

       <location>
         <!-- Translators: MARS stands for Meteorological Automatic Reporting System. -->
         <_name>Blue River MARS</_name>
         <code>CWSV</code>
         <coordinates>52-06N 119-18W</coordinates>
       </location>

Would you be willing to do this, and share your pieces of knowledge in
comments?

Otherwise I'll do it sometime, if I can remember it. In that case, the
safest thing is probably to put it in a bug report in Bugzilla, so that
I'll maybe remember it.
