Hi Reinout,
Why there's a difference between the two programs, I don't know, but it might
be solved by installing the right locale.  I believe Solaris uses UTF-8, so in
that case it would be:
                                                                                                                             
# localedef -i nl_NL -c -f UTF-8 nl_NL
