This is what I do for the Slovak translation:

applet=applet (it would be too long to describe that)

GUI = direct translation of "graphical interface", or depending on the 
      context

VFS = VFS, shell = shell (typically, sometimes command line)
sub-shell, sub-shell support - this are broken terms IMHO and should not 
be used at all.

pixmap = This one is hard to handle - pixmap or image

widget = part of the graphical interface, element

encapsulated PostScript = translate "encapsulated" only

metafile = another broken too-hackish term, always trying to avoid in the 
           translation

Describe in your local context. More like "ultimate tool"

We have a rule for that: directory is for system, low-level stuff, 
administration-related. folder is for end-user.

vfolder should be discarded as well - a hackish term again. I'm sometimes 
using "virtual folder", but it's hard to be consistent with this one.

All of them have a standardized translation in our glossary.
