UTF-8 character in msgid not working

Does anyone have an idea why an UTF-8 character in a msgid wouldn't work
when both the source file and the po file are encoded in UTF-8?

This is the case with gnumeric HEAD and sv.po -- the description of the
NT_MU function has an "ö" in "Möbius", but on my system (with gettext
0.11.1) I get loads of warnings from xgettext when updating the file and
it will just be "Mbius" in the msgid, which of course makes the po
catalog lookup for that message fail, so that it won't display
translated.

Two persons have verified that it *will* work with gettext 0.10.40, so
is there anyone else that can reproduce this error with other gettext
versions?
