It's up to the translator to decide whether to keep them or not.
For my translations I remove them if I'm convinced they are actually
obsolete. It could happen somebody messed up with POTFILES.in and with
a sudden you're carefully done translations are marked "obsolete"; some
days later it shows up that the strings were only moved from one file to
the other -- as long as the obsolete entries are still present, msgmerge
will revive them for you :)
This is much, much easier than checking out old version from CVS
etc. (not to mention other projects don't using CVS).
