I guess it will work when all involved .po files have charset info
entries:

"MIME-Version: 1.0\n"
"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1\n"
"Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n"

Because of race conditions of 'msgcomm' the header sometimes is thrown
away...
