He was presumably mirroring off one of the anoncvs mirrors, which are
still running and still could be rsync'ed from, using 
anoncvs.eu.gnome.org as the hostname, say. (I think that's the right
one.) Of course, then you get all the old lag back or more.

We've never allowed anonymous rsync from cvs.gnome.org, and I'm not
sure it's a good idea. The GNOME repository is *huge* compared to the
stuff people are interested in, and an rsync of the whole repository
takes several minutes of server CPU time to complete, even if nothing
has changed. (Memory, from a while ago.)
