dialogue icons (for the most part, some of them could scare novice
users), pressing a key to activate a button actually shows it depressing
(this is surprisingly important!), and general improvements in
appearance. oh, and lets not forget double buffering...

These are not inconsequential changes, and users *will* notice. I have
enjoyed having anti-aliasing on my computer a lot, and it will be great
to have that in mainstream GNOME, and that's just one of many new
features.

Choosing a more attractive default theme (since of course, we will be
using metathemes rather than having component specific themes ;-) would
be another way to significantly improve at least the first impression
with little effort on our part.
