GNOME 1.6

Hi all,

In the midst of all this discussion about the next versions of GTK+ and
gnome-libs - all of which has been intriguing to watch from the sidelines -
two points have really stood out as Highly Important Stuff.

First, that we should release more regularly, and second, that GNOME 2.0
should kick some serious arse. I would love to see GNOME 2.0 be the rich,
component-based system many of us have imagined for so long...

But that might be a little tough when you balance it with a hopeful release
this side of Chinese New Year. ;) How does the following sound:

GNOME 1.6: Bugfixes, improved Nautilus release and integration (significant
           update), Evolution (or significant update if released earlier),
           new features backported from GNOME 2.0 where appropriate. Strong
           GNOME 2.0 Preview release included.

GNOME 2.0: Platform release, GTK+ 2.0, library refactoring, component model
           for whole desktop, etc, etc, etc.

Not sure if anything less than "the whole hog" of a new platform release is
being considered, but a path like this may save any dreadfully long
gestation periods for GNOME 2.0, and also buy some time to make GNOME 2.0
the magical release it should be.
