OS/2's WPS has a style of menu called Conditional Cascading Menus (CCM) that
might be suitable for this feature. It has the visual appearance of a
traditional cascading menu (Menu text with arrow on right hand side) but
with a box around the arrow to make it appear as if it were a button. If the
user selects the text portion of the menu item, the default action is
performed. If the user selects the arrow/button, a submenu appears. See the
following link for a picture (3rd image down).

I could see this menu style being useful in a lot of situations; mainly to
reduce context menu clutter.
I don't like that, at least with an arrow for the image. Use another
image and I might like it. Perhaps if the user clicks on the icon in
the menu it could perform a default action. That default action could
be configured, or as an option, be the most often selected item from the
submenu.
