RE: type of users in a unix environment



I know that some novices just want the basics as you say but the option to 
easily access advanced options when needed.  I guess a thing like ICQ and 
would work in theory.  In practicality, ICQ does this yet novices still run 
for the hills when they have to use ICQ.  Why?  Even with the "simple" 
interface... it's too complex for a novice to understand.

A novice user can understand the basic Windows 95 interface with the 
exception of the start menu - because they don't understand why they have 
to go to START when they want to STOP using their computer.  Stupid little 
things like that screw up novices.

I am not saying this will not work, but don't think just because there are 
fewer buttons, all of a sudden a novice will understand everything.

Why not set a very basic GUI option(for the newbie) and let the advance 
user set the GUI to advance
