Not a bad idea.  I don't know for sure, but most Gnome style apps
keep a list of recently opened files in a plaintext resource file.

One of the problems, though, is you open a file in gimp, then close the
file.  Then you go to reopen it with this new "recent file" listing..
but, since you hadn't quit the gimp, it hadn't saved it's list yet...

So it would probably be something that needs to be incorporated into the
gnome apps themselves.  Hrm
