File dialogs: File management

File management capabilities:
What file management capabilities should the dialog have?

One the one hand it is desirable that the dialog should contain as
little clutter as possible. The dialogs are for the purposes of
selecting files only. Distracting the user from that task is not a
good thing.

On the other hand opening and saving often necessitates some
reorganisation of the existing files. Forcing the user to open up a
file manager in order to do so is inconvenient.
