File dialogs: Filtering

Filtering the file list view:
This is probably the largest grey area in this discussion. I have no
idea what the correct way to proceed is.

Some problems: How do various elements of the gui interact. If there
is a "show files of type" menu, how does this interact with the
pattern in the filename text field (assuming the text field has a
filtering role). Similarly with options to show hidden files.

What style of wildcard or regexp pattern will be used?

Assuming the filename text field has a filtering role, at what point
are changes in the field applied to the file list?
