You can change the colors using the Gtk rc configuration mechanism.
And if you use themes, you can change the look of your widgets.

Of course, patches to improve the look of the default themes are welcome.

We will have alpha compositing for icons at some point.  The
GnomePixmap widget to be hacked to do it automatically.
