At least, a translator comment should be placed there to avoid

That would indeed make sense. Is it possible to place such comments in
the Mallard markup code?
There's a description with a generic example available from W3C [1].
Seems to be quite simple, and it is already used in our user manual,
see [2].
Here's the relevant content:
<p xmlns:its="http://www.w3.org/2005/11/its" its:locNote="translators:
xdg dirs are localised by package xdg-user-dirs and need to be
translated. You can find the correct translations for your language
here: http://translationproject.org/domain/xdg-user-dirs.html">These
are usually stored in your home folder (<file>/home/your_name</file>).
They could be in subfolders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures,
Music and Videos.</p>

Thanks!
I submitted a patch to
<https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=794187> which suggests the
addition of a translators comment. Hopefully someone can commit it even
if the bug was marked resolved...
