Where did you install to? Did you pass --prefix to configure,
or use the default? The autotools default is /usr/local.
I generally install stuff to /opt/gnome2. If you install to
non-standard prefixes, there's some environment variables
you need to set up to make things build and run correctly.
This is what I do:
export ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /opt/gnome2/share/aclocal"
export
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/gnome2/lib/pkgconfig:/opt/gnome2/share/pkgconfig
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/gnome2/lib
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/opt/gnome2/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/share
