For what it's worth, I agree with Mark. This all looks sensible. And the
principle of only storing the images in one location is the Right
Thing(tm).

On this issue I have no opinion, since I am not really somebody who
updates the documentation. It's a little more onerous, but no more so
than checking i18n fixes (which also need to be installed to work).
Possibly having a handy convenience script (make doc-check?) might be
easier.
