Guidelines for using abbreviations

In response to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104439, I was
searching the style guide for recommendations regarding using
abbrevations. I only skimmed through the style guide, but I couldn't
find any.
So, are there recommendations for these? What would be appicable to the
above bug report? Comments in the bug report are also appreciated.
