There is a short recommendation regarding abbreviations in the Grammar and Usage 
section of the GDSG, but perhaps we could expand the recommendation slightly to 
handle cases such as those highlighted in the bug you pointed to. I have put my 
thoughts about the particular bug into the bug report.
