Re: [Fwd: Cleaning up CVS (Entropy Foundation Telethon!)]

I agree with Irene. The /contrib area is performing a function that the community wanted as well as Sun. In other words, to act as a holding area for the latest versions of any piece of work that Sun does, pending community acceptance. Every time we submit something to GNOME, we ask the maintainer if this document is going to be accepted for general use. We advise the Sun L10N team to pick stuff up from the /contrib area because that is a lot more straightforward than picking up packages from all over the CVS tree. The various branches of the CVS tree can be confusing, and our current process guarantees that the Sun L10N team pick up the latest versions. Admittedly, the L10N angle wasn't the original purpose of the /contrib area, so we were capitalizing on an existing process.

Now, having said that, I also agree that having copies of the same documentation in the GNOME CVS tree seems like belt-and-braces redundancy. We need to look at ways to reduce the redundancy. However, the Sun L10N team is right now in the process of doing the translations on the items that are in /contrib, so now would not be a good time to change the process. If you allow us time until the Sun L10N team have finished their work, then we will work out a new approach that we will suggest to you all, bearing in mind the requirement to reduce duplication. The Sun L10N should have finished their work on the ORMs within the next few weeks, the GNOME User Guide will take a while longer. So, if it's ok with everybody we will address this issue when the current wave of Sun translations is finished. Please hold off on deleting the files in /contrib for now. Thanks for letting us know about this problem.

Hi Eric,

Please do not delete the files that are in the gnome-docu/gdp/contrib
area for the moment. These are all up-to-date copies of the
documentation that is also stored in the application /help/C or doc/C
directories. The Sun doc team have been using this area to make
documentation available to the community for review prior to adding the
documentation to the application directories. It is also the area from
which the Sun localization team are picking up manuals for translation.

Regards,
-Irene

I believe all of these docs are either very old or already in another
module, like gnome-user-docs for the user_guide and user_guide20.

Hi all,

This has to happen *NOW*, because canvas is running out of space. I'm still
working on /home and a few other sillies throughout the system, but it would
help if we cleaned out the cruft in CVS.

Thus, I'm proud to announce...

THE 2002 Entropy Foundation Telethon! HURRAH!

Anders has already donated libgnome.copy and libgnomeui.copy - what a guy!
Sun have donated gconf-editor.old! Between them, that's a very generous
TWENTY MEGABYTES back in the entropy pool... HOORAY!

Put your bitbucket where your mouth is... DONATE NOW!

Our operators are waiting for your call.

Thanks,

- Jeff
