you really mean the index - the one at the end of document, listing
alphabetically all terms marked by <indexterm> in the document body -
and not the TOC of one of the sections, right? (I am asking because I
have seen people confuse them)
If so, then I am afraid there is no way to put the short descrition in
the autogenerated index (which is the way index is supposed to be
generated). Of course, you can also create the index manually, like
this:
<index><title>Index</title>
<indexentry>
<primaryie>Sum - Finds the sum of the specified fields, pp. 253,
255</primaryie>
</indexentry>
</index>
