some information on installing GNOME can be found in GNOME FAQ at 
http://www.gnome.org/faqs/users-faq/ 

However, I do not think there is anything about HPUX there. The only
reason: the author of this document (Telsa) doesn't have HPUX, so she
never tried installing GNOME on one. If someone (e.g., you) sends her
some info, I am sure she will include it in the next version.

  You can also find information on building GNOME from source ---
which should (mostly) work on any Unix platform - at
http://www.gnome.org/start/installing/

Finally, you can ask a question on gnome mailing list - probably
someone there will help.

Yes, you are right that installation should be better discussed -
however, most users use binaries provided by Helix Code, which makes
installation trivial. Too bad they don't have binaries for HPUX yet. 
Maybe, they will carry them soon...
