This could be checked via /etc/fstab (possibly falling back to the df
command if that doesn't work) to get the physical device, at least for
the common cases of nfs/smb mounted drives.

It's low level, and a bit icky, but what you're trying to do is hide
this low level stuff from the user so sie doesn't have to worry about
it. It's a war, gentlemen, and sometimes people get hurt[1].
