Accessing the Underlying Widget for GNOME_APP_UI_TOGGLEITEM!!!

I spent the last 3 hours trying to figure out how to access the
underlying widget for a GNOME_APP_UI_TOGGLEITEM _without_ first having
to wait for someone to click on it and them catching the event.
Could someone please clue me in before I go insane. ;) Thanks....
