this is quite strange, since I suppose you're running a GNOME desktop
and are trying to run gnomedb-fe from the menu. Right?
so, this seems a X problem, not a gnome-db one. Are you running gnomedb-fe with
a different user than your X session? What does "echo $DISPLAY" says?
can you run other GNOME apps?
I think you should try to compile from sources yourself, to see if the
problems are still there or not. I really don't have any experience on
FreeBSD, so I can't say for sure what may be happening, but it really
seems an X problem :-(
