Yes - it's called the Object Activation Framework (oaf in Gnome 1.4)
and bonobo-activation in Gnome 2.0. Checkout those modules & the
documentation therein.
The process that implements the object is automatically forked for you,
an object constructed and returned [ or it can be linked in as a shlib
].
