Joerg,
I understand your motivations for not linking against ORBit, OAF
and Gnorba. That being said:
1. Some applications currently link with Gnorba, and they will
likely do so in GNOME 1.4 (Gnome Terminal and the Panel are the
only ones I can think of).
2. Pretty much everything else in 1.4 will be using OAF. This
release is probably the first one that is making serious use of
CORBA. In the past we have mostly done small things with
it only.

yes, this is possible. You could duplicate the bits of code that have
to deal with object activation and just use plain IIOP over unix
sockets (we use a special "enhanced" IOR encoding to point to this
unix socket in ORBit that you would have to support as well).
