I've just tried another computer (my desktop PC at work) and I get a different error. This is related to udev, I hope it's easier to sort it out:

another test: same computer but using colorhug
the first time I try to calibrate I get the same error about usb-db:

[106470.960041] usb 5-2: Product: ColorHug
[106470.960044] usb 5-2: Manufacturer: Hughski Ltd.
[106470.967219] hid-generic 0003:04D8:F8DA.0004: hiddev0,hidraw1: USB HID v1.11 Device [Hughski Ltd. ColorHug] on usb-0000:00:1d.1-2/input0
[106471.035716] udevd[2549]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/usb-db' 'usb-db /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb5/5-2/5-2:1.0': No such file or directory

then I try again, the calibration starts but it fails after 5 minutes
message in ~/.cache/gdm/session.log:
