how to debug panel applets ?

Can somebody give me a pointer to how to debug failure of panel applets 
to load ? I turned on gdb before trying to load the weather applet (gdb 
gnome-panel <pid>), which "quits unexpectedly" trying to load, but gdb 
doesn't show any output from panel. ??
