I've switched to gnome-boxes from virtualbox in order to learn more about
qemu/kvm and have some specific questions about Boxes as follows. Note I'm
using boxes on Arch with gnome 3.12

Great. Then youll geht 3.14 soon.

a. When I imported my Windows VM from VirtualBox, it saved the image as
"boxes-unknown", is there a way to change the name to something more
obvious?

In the properties you should be able to just click on the name and then
change it. In 3.14 you will be able to click the top bar and do it there if
zeenix didn't change it again.

b. Not strictly a boxes question but is there any way to get qemu to not
capture specific keys? I'd like the keys to change gnome workspaces to
always go to the host to make it easy to switch between guest and host. If
no, how do most people handle easily switching between host and guest?

This is still a matter of discussion.

There are quite some bugs open around this matter. In general we appreciate
any input on how we can improve! If you feel a certain behaviour would be
handy thats where you can change and shape things.

c. Is there a way to launch a specific VM directly using Boxes, for
example if I want to create a launcher to directly start my Windows VM. I
know I could run it through qemu directly but would prefer to stay in the
boxes interface.

You can do:

gnome-boxes path/to/iso.iso

However you can't do:

gnome-boxes vm_name

which would be handy. I opened

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=736917

for you.

d. Is there a way to get boxes to launch VMs in a window instead of
full-screen? If I can't figure out how to resolve point B this might have to
be my fullback or switch back to VirtualBox.

If I get correctly what you mean this should be better in 3.14: we made
fullscreening an explicit operation, therefore you only go to fullscreen if
you explicitly click this tiny fullscreen button. In addition you'll get the
possibility to launch several VMs in several windows at the same time thanks
to Adrien Plazas.

And lastly I'm really enjoying Boxes so far, great work by the team and
look forward to seeing what improvements come in 3.14.

Thats great to hear! Thank you very much for your feedback and questions
