Problem with speech on a ubuntu 6.10 system

Hello,

I try to use Ubuntu in VMware-Player on a Windows XP system.
I downloaded the image from
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/693.

I have managed to get the sound working, however the speech sounds
like rustle and one can not understand it.

Any hints?
